Works on Paper

I have always drawn and painted. Lately my efforts have been concentrated on woodturning, but working on paper runs deep in my artistic veins. Early on, I worked mainly in black and white using graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, etc. This was due mainly to my colorblindness. Later in life, I discovered that there were no rules for using color and that the sun would still rise if I accidentally substituted purple for blue. So, I moved into pastels, watercolors, oil and acrylic paints. In the process, I discovered a whole new world of expression. This gallery contains recent pieces available for sale.

If you would like to commission a graphite, charcoal or pastel piece, please contact Chas directly either by email or by using the form on the CONTACT page.

Lexicon CAD Art

As far as I know, I am the first and only person to use CAD software to create a portrait. In my profession I use CAD software every day to create schematics, diagrams and drawings of electronic systems. I have worked with CAD software since the mid 1980s and have created thousands of technical drawings over the years. In those years, I always had an idea that CAD software could be used for fine art.

The following images consist solely of text objects created with CAD and copied over and over and over again. The text is scaled, rotated and combined in different ways to create the required density at any given point in the drawing. All the text objects are placed by "hand" using mouse commands. No filters, "plug-ins" or any other automation is used. This is truly handmade art, just using CAD software as the pencil.

These limited edition prints are output using the Durst Lambda laser imaging machine. The images are rendered directly to archival quality photograpic paper and have all the qualities of a fine photograpic print.
